2010 - more exploration

I started back at art school on Monday 3rd March and by Wednesday had made 18 vases - pretty rough and ready but as they are purely for glaze tests, I'm not focusing too much on form. Having said that, I let the thrown bases dry out too much overnight so they were difficult to turn the next day and the result is that they are all somewhat 'stolid' at the base rather than being more curved and elegant. However, you never know what might surprise once a few firings are underway. Heights range from 18-26cm

Striped pot

This is one of the group of 18cm high pots I made during the last semester in 2009. Several people whose opinions on matters ceramic I value, have said it is "well resolved" so I am studying it to fix in my own mind, what qualities it has so I can make more which are equally satisfying to the viewer.

Blossom time

At the eleventh hour, I finally pull one out of the kiln that says "YES"!. It suffered 3 firings to achieve this result and I love it.

These vases have undergone multiple firings as part of a continual experiment in glaze techniques.

Symbolic landscapes: terra firma 65cm
The last of a group of 4 tall pots - at last I have found which kiln and at which temperature I can fire these earthenware pots to achieve exactly the right colour of the clay body, something that has eluded me other than accidentally all semester. It seems that it only takes a few degrees to push the clay from the desired red to a horrible khaki.
