Oriental screen
This screen was bought a year ago from a wonderful second-hand shop in Hazelbrook, Blue Mts for a song. It was described as a 'Japanese Nouveau screen' which I didn't quite understand. The images are of the hare, crab, quail and tortoise but I haven't been able to exactly decypher the script. It doesn't look like either Japanese or Chinese. More sleuthing is underway. The reason it didn't come home with us a year ago was because I couldn't bear the thought of facing customs officials at midnight so it has, at long last, come to Dunedin.

So were the customs officials okay with your screen?
They asked me what it was, I said "it's a screen". "An outdoor one?" he asked. "No, an indoor one." I replied. "Just put it on the Xray machine" and all was fine. No unwrapping to see if the stored beetle eggs had hatched in the meantime but I would have happily unwrapped it. I had had such a hard time previously bringing back my large Buddha canvas with the official attacking the wrapping with a pair of scissors!I protested that it was canvas and fragile so could I unwrap part of it and she said 'no'. But then let me go!
